Evolutionary Change

Published on March 17, 2011 in Books, Technology

There’s a gadget out there; one that I’ve been sitting on the fence about.  Those that know me will understand how unusual this is, for me to NOT be investigating the latest gadget etc is extremely unusual!

I am referring to the Amazon Kindle.

As a lover of books, I’ve not really been attracted to buying one, I’m not really sure why, and in hindsight I wish I’d bought one sooner.

But, recently based on the recommendation of a friend, I took the plunge, and I’m extremely glad I did!

The screen is; simply put .. Stunning ..   It’s not an LCD or LED screen, there’s no use comparing it to an iPad or mobile phone, instead it uses an amazing e-Ink “Pearl” technology which uses a Pearlescent white/grey background capable of 4 different shades of black/grey.  From what I understand it only uses power when changing the display, thus accounting for an excellent battery life, and it’s extremely readable in direct sunlight.  Of course it suffers in the same way a conventional book does in low light situations.

I’ve been using mine for a couple of weeks now, and haven’t read so much in years!  I’ve been looking at different sources for the books (not just Amazon’s online shop) and I’m confident I can find sufficient reading material with the right appeal to keep me going for years.  It’s light, it’s effective, it’s easy to read, I’m sold.  My only real dilemma now is that I need to decide if I’m going to keep my existing library of books which take up lots of space on the shelf and gather dust, or whether I should start to replace them with the electronic versions.

Having said all that, I have two reservations about Kindle.

Firstly – and perhaps somewhat selfishly – I use Books as a ready source of gift ideas for people.  I maintain an Amazon Wishlist which usually has a selection of Books and DVD’s on it which I can refer people to when they ask the inevitable questions around Christmas and Birthdays, and I can’t see an easy way of someone buying me an e-Book, and certainly not wrapping it up to give as a gift in a few weeks.  Sure you could probably use a gift voucher or something, but it’d be nice if Amazon could come up with something to make this easier.

Secondly – There are two types of book.  The largest section of the market I can see being ‘compatible’ with Kindle, all of my Fiction collection and most of my reference books for work are monochrome (Covers notwithstanding), but I do have a small percentage of books that contain full colour glossy photos.  Cookery books for example, and as it stands Kindle just doesn’t lend itself to these books.

Imagine then my surprise and indeed glee after doing some Google searches to find the Kindle picture above to find that the company behind the existing display technology have produced a COLOUR version of the same tech, called e-Ink “Triton” which has extremely interesting possibilities.

It is my estimation that this is going to change the way we read and use books forever.  The ONLY thing that’s missing is a better way to manage and index the library of content on the device.  Just putting it in to an Alphabetic list doesn’t really do what’s needed.

Recommended Reading

Published on March 1, 2011 in Books, Entertainment

It’s been a little while since I found a book that really captivated me, and I’m pleased to report that it’s finally happened once again.

Regular visitors will be aware of my enjoyment of Military Scifi books by the likes of David Weber, Jack Campbell, and Mike Shepherd.  I’ve recently been able to add a new author to the list! – John Ringo.

I found it courtesy of an Amazon recommendation, but it sounded like something I might enjoy, so I first tried reading Live Free Or Die (Troy Rising) followed by it’s sequel Citadel

Ringo seems to have an interesting perspective on Scifi in that he takes a modern human society and throws it straight in to the proverbial deep end of Alien First Contact, usually with fairly negative consequences.  The Troy Rising series was my first exposure, and I loved the Economic aspects, the scale of manufacturing and production effort and changes as the Human race struggles to get to grips with the new Alien technology and integrate it, all the while attempting to play catch-up and defend Earth against multiple alien species who are orders of magnitude more advanced.

I’ve since gone back to read A Hymn Before Battle (Posleen War) which seems to follow the same basic premise, but instead thrusts an ill prepared human race straight in to an off-world conflict.

So far I’m loving every minute of it, and will be reading many more of Ringo’s works in the coming weeks.

Have you read any good books recently?

Decision!

Published on February 15, 2011 in Car

Since last week I’ve been grappling with a difficult decsision.

What new car to have!

I had a choice of four possibilities open to me.  These were:

  • Audi A3 1.6 TDi S Line Sportback (105bhp)
  • BMW 118d SE (143bhp)
  • Vauxhall Insignia 2.0CDTi Elite ecoFLEX (160bhp)
  • Ford Mondeo 2.0 TDCi Titanium X (140bhp)

I pretty much ruled the A3 and BMW 118 out immediately due to size.  Being the size and shape that I am (ahem) I thought I’d need a slightly larger car.

I then reasoned that I’d find an Estate version somewhat beneficial these days because of a certain four legged friend, so I started looking seriously at the Mondeo and Insignia, trying to decide.

This proved to be anything but easy!  The majority of people I spoke to recommended the Mondeo, but I’ve historically preferred Vauxhall’s to Fords.  I have nothing against Ford but liked Vauxhall’s better.  So I decided the only option was to try and test drive!

The local Ford and Vauxhall garages were exceedingly unhelpful.  None of the local Vauxhall garages had the Estate version of the Insignia, so I resorted to testing a colleagues’ Insignia Hatchback out one Lunchtime.  I found it Ok but my intial impression was that the visibility was quite poor due to a small rear window and wing mirrors that were almost triangular.   “Lookers” Ford initially gave me quite a runaround, with the Colchester branch first saying they didn’t have a Mondeo Estate available at all (same story as the Vauxhall Garage really), but then”Lookers” in Clacton saying that they didn’t have one… but (wait for it!) … Colchester did!

I eventually managed to test drive a 2.2 Mondeo CDTi Estate on Saturday but found it exceedingly dissapointing.

Finally I made the decision, and the order is in… for the Insignia.

Vauxhall somewhat pretentiously call it the “Sports Tourer”, and it does look quite smart.  This is the colour I’ve chosen .. “Technical Grey” apparently.

Insignia

I should take receipt some time in June!   Full spec here

Putting things in to perspective!

Published on July 21, 2010 in Reflections

I was just reading an article on the Sky News website about a new “Blue Giant” star that’s been discovered in the Large Magellanic Cloud.

It linked to this Youtube Video to help you visualise the sheer size.   I love it, as it kind of puts life in to perspective!

Settling in

Published on June 12, 2010 in Tinker

This morning at 10:30am we went off to collect Tinker from the Suffolk RGT.

Just before that we went to Pets at Home in Colchester to collect a few last minute essentials (Toys, Treats, and Grooming gear), and just about had time to grab a cup of Coffee at Waitrose before dashing off to collect him.

Tinker was a little nervous in the car on the way home, continually panting, but soon settled down when we got out of the car at home.  He very quickly explored the house and gardens, and seemed quite taken with one of the old cuddly toys we’d found for him to play with.

Here’a a few photos of him meeting the family and exploring the Garden.

He certainly liked the mix of food we gave him for his dinner.  It’s probably fortunate they don’t make dog bowls with patterns on!

We let him rest for a while after lunch, before taking him for a walk at about 3.15.  He has been brilliant at every step of the way so far, the one or two times we’ve had to say “NO” have mostly been to stop him getting in the Fishpond, which he seemed most insistent in trying.

As I type this he keeps back and forth between me in my room on the Computer and the Conservatory where Gran’s enjoying a cup of tea.

Toilet training is so far so good, no little accidents indoors, and he’s been for number ones’ and a number two in the garden.

We haven’t heard him Bark once yet!

Keeping everything crossed

Published on June 6, 2010 in Tinker

We’ve discussed this previously, and never really knew how to go about it, so when we bumped in to the Retired Greyhounds Trust representatives at The Suffolk Show last week, we were only too glad to take one of their leaflets home to read and discuss.

We discussed, and phoned, and went out to visit them today, and hurrah!  We’re hoping to be able to offer a new home to a Retired Racing Greyhound called “Tinker”.

We next need a “home check” visit to make sure that our house is suitable, and we can’t think of a reason why it wouldn’t be, so with a little luck we’ll have a new companion in the house very soon!

He is simply gorgeous, and has such a relaxed manner about him.   One of the big benefits for me will be that I now have a reason to go out for a half hour walk a couple of times a day!  Some regular exercise will do me good!

I just want to say… I want one..

Published on February 3, 2010 in IT, Technology

… nay, I NEED one!

What am I on about you may ask?

The answer is simple….  one of these:

It’s an LG N2B1DD2 2 Bay Blu-ray Network Attached Storage 2TB which connects to the Network and provides Network Attached Disk for me to back up and archive data to.

I’ve had a 1Tb Buffalo Terastation for about five years now, and it’s choc-full of data, with my MP3 Collection, my Library of Audiobooks, copies of most of my Applications and so forth, and that’s BEFORE I count the Multi-Gigabyte’s of Documentation I’ve accumulated from all the different PC’s I look after, and various Laptops that “visit” for me to maintain!

The Buffalo was a 1Tb, the new one is 2Tb but has the added benefit of allowing me to migrate on-line storage to near-line or off line using the built-in Blu-Ray recorder, which is REALLY interesting!

The fact that it’ll work as a DLNA Server, so I could stream Video straight from the storage device to my Whizzy Samsung 7-Series TV is a huge bonus, and the iTunes Server thing is quite interesting too.

So, this is squarely on my list of gadgets to acquire.  Psst;  Anyone want to buy a 2nd hand Buffalo Terastation??  :)

Christmas Crisis!

Published on December 1, 2009 in Christmas

I’m pleased to report that I have the vast majority of my Christmas Shopping completed, and even most of what I’ve bought is already wrapped up!

I say the “vast majority” guardedly, as I’ve just arrived home to discover the latest batch of parcels have arrived from www.play.com with some stocking filler type presents in.   Unfortunately in what has to be one of the worst examples of customer service I’ve seen for some time, I’ve received two items that bear absolutely no resemblance to what I ordered.

Of a total of 8 different items, two were identical, and should have been in the “Gadgets” category.  I won’t describe exactly what they should have been here, just in case the intended recipient should drop by, instead I’ll refer to them as “Item X”; but instead I received two “5m Belkin Cat6 Snagless Patch Cables” which I notice aren’t even listed on their Website as a stock item!

So I phoned the Play.com Helpdesk, and eventually spoke to someone about the issue.  I have to say the quality of the phone line was very poor indeed, but I got the distinct impression that the chap on the other end of the phone just wasn’t listening to me.   I gave him the details including the order number and product codes of the erroneous items, and eventually he said “Ok I need to verify your identity, can I please have your postal code?”   … so I tell him quite clearly…. “so that’s {completely wrong postal code}, correct?” … uh no,  tell him this time spelling it out phonetically …. “In order to verify your identity, can I please have your full name?”  … so I tell him… and he (perhaps unsurpisingly) can’t pronounce my surname;  then…. “in order to verify your identity can I please have your full address…?”   at which point I’m starting to get annoyed, and ask just how much more he needs to verify my identity given that I’ve already given him the order numbers, and sufficient information to prove that I’m who I claim to be;   “I appreciate you’re frustrated sir, but please let me verify your details so I can help you, now can I please have the item numbers?”  which I give him again, and of course suggest that if the packing and quality control departments took half as much care as he was apparently taking, I’d never have received such a ludicrous substitution!

Anyway, to cut a fairly painful conversation short, it seems that I need to pay for the postage and packing to return the items to them, and when they receive them they will process a refund of my postage costs and dispatch replacements…. or at least they would if they had them in stock.   And of course there’s no estimated delivery date for any additional stock.   I think it’s bloody awful that I as a customer have to pay out and inconvenience myself just to fix their stupid mistake.

And to add insult to injury, given there’s no stock left, I now need to find a couple of alternative gifts!  I knew there was a reason I stopped buying products from Play.com;   Maybe they should look at my pages of previous orders, and note that I stopped being a regular customer a few years ago!

Very poor customer service Play.com!
