Gwen Cummings (Sandra Bullock) has a seemingly fabulous life in the city, an impressive job working as a columnist for one of its newspapers, an ultra-hip boyfriend named Jasper (Dominic West) and a severe drinking problem, one which she can no longer deny when, on her sister’s wedding day, she hijacks a limo and crashes it into a house, an act for which she is sentenced either to rehab or to jail, her choice. Naturally, Gwen opts for rehab, but believing that she doesn’t really belong there amongst its eclectic and eccentric denizens, she refuses to participate and even sabotages her own recovery. When her counselor threatens to just send her off to jail anyway, and her fellow patients register their disdain for her devil-may-care attitude both toward her own problems and their attempts at recovery, the light bulb slowly begins to go on. Gwen is paired up as a roommate with a young girl named Andrea (Azura Skye) toward whom she begins to develop maternal and caring feelings, and finds mutually supportive friendships with sex-addicted baseball pitcher Eddie Boone (Viggo Mortensen), recovering doctor Daniel (Reni Santoni), sweet and openly gay Gerhardt (Alan Tudyk), and resident mother hen Bobbie Jean (Diane Ladd). Along the way, Gwen not only learns to face her own demons and limitations, but also to accept and understand the life she and her frustrated but ultimately loving and forgiving sister, Lily (Elizabeth Perkins) have both lived through and grown from.
